Village Elections will be held Tuesday March 20, 2012 from 12 pm—9 pm. The following offices will be filled:
Trustees—Two (2), positions, two (2) year term each.

Prospective candidates for the above offices must be 18 years of age or older, and must have been a resident of the Village for at least 30 days prior to the election. Absentee ballots can be picked up at the Village Office.

Winter 2011

Effective December 1 there is no parking on village streets between 2
am—6 am. This law is in effect until April 1. Please remember to move
your car off the street so plows can get through and make the streets safe for drivers. Not complying may resultin a parking ticket.
Also, according to Village Code, all property owners in the Village are
responsible to clear sidewalks ofsnow and ice within 24 hours of the
end of snowfall. Please do not shovelthe snow from sidewalks on to public streets.
Keeping the streets and sidewalks clear during the winter months is
important not only for the safety ofdrivers but for people, young and old, that have to walk to school, the grocery store or just to get the paper.
Please be a conscientious neighborand do your part in maintaining your
sidewalk.

Join the Roswell-McDaniels Post 407 American Legion, Hammondsport for a Dedication Ceremony for the new Roll of Honor at 11 a.m. on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11 at the Hammondsport Village Square. Featuring Hammondsport American Legion, Color Guard; speaker Gary Pruyn, Air Force Veteran & Retired Steuben County Youth Director; and Gerald Hamblin, Retired Navy Veteran as Chaplain. The new Roll of Honor has over 800 names of Urbana Veterans from the Civil War to current.

You may have seen a new face in the village. Joe Stremel has joined Sergeant Ryan Sincerbox in the police department. Joe has been hired as part-time police officer for the village. Many of you may have already met him at the Music in the park on Thursdays. Joe is a retired police officer from New York City. He and his wife now reside on the east side of Keuka Lake.

The police department would like to generate an In Case Of Emergency Log for village residents. Some people that leave for the winter or for vacation stop in the village office and give information to the clerk or the police department, however not everyone does so Sergeant Sincerbox would like to get this information from residents whether you are planning to leave your home or not. This is also a good safety precaution for our older residents. Forms were included in your water bill.** Please fill one out and send it with your water payment. Everything will be kept confidential.

Please have garbage and recycling out Tuesday night. Recycling is picked up the second Wednesday of each month. Recycling containers are available in the Village Office. We now have large square containers for $12.00 each. All items must be separated.

Trick - or Treat 2011

The Village of Hammondsport "Trick-or-Treat" will be observed on Monday, October 31, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please drive with caution - there will be many children on the street and costumes/masks often limit the wearers field of vision.

At 7:30 there is a parade in the village square park with costume judging, as well as cider and donuts, sponsored by the Park Inn.

Hammondsport gets $432K in State Grants

A state grant will help spruce up the streets and businesses surrounding Hammondsport’s village square next summer.

The Hammondsport Chamber of Commerce was recently awarded a grant for approximately $432,000, said John Jensen, Chamber president.

The funding comes from the New York Main Street grant program, administered by the state’s Office of Community Renewal.

The grant includes about $340,000 for upgrades to nine buildings in Hammondsport’s downtown area, officially known as the Pulteney Square Historic District.

There’s also $60,000 earmarked for signage, lighting, benches, sidewalks and brick walkways on public streets near the square, Jensen said. Another $32,000 will pay for the hiring of a consulting firm to administer the project and handle the permits needed because the area is a registered historic district, he added.

The Main Street grant will be supplemented by about $130,000 worth of matching funds the building owners have agreed to contribute to the various projects.

It’s a fairly large grant for a small village to get, Jensen said, and it should make Hammondsport more attractive to the tourists that flock to Keuka Lake and its wineries during the summer and fall, he said.

“We’re really excited about it, because this represents probably half the buildings in our downtown,” Jensen said. “So it’ll make a significant positive change.”

Most of the projects are for exterior work, such as brick and facades, roof work and handicap accessibility. There are also plans for rear entrance improvements and a brick walkway along the alley behind Shethar Street, where plans are in the works to add arts-related attractions.
The grant money will also help renovate upper-floor apartments, and the Chamber building will get a community room upstairs for public use.

“I think the grant is a great thing for the Village of Hammondsport. It’s going to be something that will help refresh the village itself, and also put forth a better look for everybody. I think everybody’s looking forward to it,” said Hammondsport developer Jim Keena, who owns more than a half-dozen downtown buildings.

One of the buildings Keena owns is the old opera house at 59-67 Shethar St., which has three businesses – Mudlust Pottery, Lake Country Patchwork and Opera House Antiques – on the bottom floor.

The Main Street grant will go toward things like brick and roof work, along with HVAC and plumbing upgrades for the former opera house.

He’s in the process of building five luxury apartments on the second floor, and there are plans to turn the upper floors into a space for art shows and music.

“We’ve put a whole bunch of money into the village so far, trying to dress it up and make it what it really should be,” Keena said. “I think we have a wonderful village here, and I think people will enjoy it, both the tourists that come, as well as the people that live here.”

Other businesses whose buildings figure to get upgrades include Locey’s Landing, Mossy Bank Mercantile, Crooked Lake Ice Cream Parlor, Mahogony Butterfly, Park Inn and Lime Berry.
The necessary paperwork will bedone this this winter and construction work will hopefully begin in the spring, Jensen said.

The Main Street grant program provides funding and technical assistance “to business improvement districts and other not-for-profit organizations that are committed to revitalizing historic downtowns, mixed-use neighborhood commercial districts, and village centers,” according to the state Office of Community Renewal’s website.

Children began going back to school on September 7. This is the first year that there will be no children at the Curtiss School therefore additional traffic will be heading to the Main Street school. Please drive carefully and keep a lookout for children crossing the streets and getting in and out of vehicles.

Hammondsport Receives National Honor

Glenn H. Curtiss Memorial Elementary School in Hammonmdsport is one of 304 National Blue Ribbon Schools this year.
The U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the recognitions, Thursday, Sept. 9. All the schools (254 public and 50 private) will be honored at an awards ceremony, Nov. 15 and 16, in Washington D.C.
Superintendent Kyle Bower said this is the first year Hammondport was named a Blue Ribbon school.
“It’s the result of hard work over many years,” he said. “Staff, parents, and the community are meeting the needs of students.”
Bower added Hammondsport was honored despite a decrease in enrollment over the last five years. He explained this means teachers can give more individual attention to students.

Chamber of Commerce donates "Pet Waste Stations"

The Hammondsport Chamber of Commerce appreciates the good work that the Town of Urbana and Village of Hammondsport do in maintaining our recreational areas. We all enjoy our parks and local business owners also appreciate their value in attracting visitors and new residents. So, we've offered a little help.

Occasionally, pet owners forget to pick up after their pets. Pet waste in our parks is unsightly, unpleasant, and unhealthy. We beleive pet owners are generally responsible folks and, given the opportunity, they'll do the right thing. Therefore, the Chamber of Commerce has offered to donate "pet waste stations" for three local parks: Hammondsport's Village Square; Depot Park; and Champlin Beach. These stations will include signage, pet waste bags, and dispensers. Perhaps this won't eliminate the problem, but we feel these stations will reduce the problem, the same way that supplying garbage cans reduces litter.
